IN THIS CASE, it was unfortunate that a kindhearted clergyman didn't check things out first. He saw an elderly woman laboriously pushing a baby carriage up a steep hill. "Let me help you," he said, and he propelled the buggy to the top of the hill.

When she thanked him, he said, "It was nothing at all. But might I kiss the baby? Your grandchild, perhaps?"

"Bless you," said the woman, "but there's no baby. It's a load of beer for my old man."
